The CrossFit Open is Coming!!

The CrossFit Open is almost upon us and CrossFit coaches and athletes all over the world are excited– it’s the most wonderful time of the CrossFit year!!

What is the CrossFit Open?

The Open is an annual, global fitness competition that’s open to athletes of all skill levels, from beginners to elite competitors.  Think of it like your neighborhood 5K – everyone can do it at their own pace, and most people are just trying to get better than they were last year, rather than competing for first place.  It’s challenging but fun and you’re surrounded by others just like you who will cheer for you the whole way.

How the CrossFit Open Works

The CrossFit Open takes place over three weeks. Each week, a new workout is released on Thursday, and participants have until Monday at 5pm to complete it and submit their scores via theCrossFit Games app.  Athletes can then compare their scores against those in their age group and region.  After completing all three Open workouts, athletes will be assigned a level based on their ranking, and can compete against those in their level during the Community Cup in June.

Who Can Participate?

The Open is for anyone who wants to test themselves, to see where they’re starting from or how far they’ve come, from beginners to elite athletes!  Workouts will have RX (prescribed), Scaled, Foundations and Masters (age 55 and older) versions to accommodate different skill levels.  Here’s an example of the different versions of an Open workout from 2024:

Why Participate?

The Open is a great way to test your fitness in a structured, competitive environment.  It allows you to track your progress from year to year, to push yourself just a little bit harder, to celebrate your fitness and and see what you can do!

How it will run at CrossFit 271?

On three consecutive Fridays (February28th, March 7th and March 14th), starting at 6pm, we will hold Friday Night Lights (FNL)! We will start with a whiteboard brief describing the workout, strategies you can use to maximize your score, and a warmup for athletes to do on their own.  Then, we will break athletes into heats, assign judges, and off we’ll go!

(All of our class WODs that day will be the Open WOD, so if you can’t make to Friday Night Lights, you can still do the workout! Judging will ONLY be done at FNL, unless you’ve made prior arrangements with Coach Kathy to be judged at another time.)

To add to the fun, we will be having an in-box competition to crown Best Team!  Athletes will be assigned to a team (Team Thruster or Team Burpee) and can earn points for different things.  The team with the most points after the three weeks will have their names put on a trophy that will hang in our gym FOREVER!!  And of course, bragging rights!  More to follow on how our team competition will run!
